TELECOMMUNICATIONS:

British Army Land Systems Reference Centre
Drumgrange has wide-ranging expertise in Army communications systems and has been associated with the British Army’s Land Systems Reference Centre at Blandford throughout its development since 1997. Working with British Telecom, we have provided ongoing support of existing facilities, designed bespoke software, test tools and services, integrated upgrades, and provided training for Test and Facility Controllers.

In 1998, we developed the application software for the Data Injection and Monitoring Equipment (DIME) and Common Timing System (CTS) to run DEC Alpha workstations associated with the Ptarmigan telecommunications system.

In 2000 and 2002 we supplied remote control facilities to enable Ptarmigan Switches and the SCRA(C) container to be controlled from Test Control.

In 2004, we designed a COTS based PC DIME, which significantly extends the LSRC’s capability for network stimulation and monitoring, and provided a common hardware and software platform for connection to new COTS based Interface Heads.

Further enhancements since 2003 have included the development of Interface Heads specific to the Cormorant and Bowman telecommunications systems.

UK Trunk Fixed Bearers
Drumgrange designed, developed and installed a system of switchable fixed communications bearers connecting to PTARMIGAN and EUROMUX trunk assets. The system connects several permanent UK sites, and controls commercial communication links for group training and exercises, and is also portable to facilitate links at temporary sites. It comprises; a central Management Terminal used to plan and implement link connectivity, an Interface and Switching Unit providing conversion, synchronisation, combining/de-combining and routing of traffic, and a Connector Panel which interfaces with PTARMIGAN and/or EUROMUX TTGs, and associated PTARMIGAN SEOW unit.

Systems Control Point (SCP)
We designed a Master and Alternate Systems Control Point for the RAF's Cyprus Communications Units in Episkopi and Akrotiri to provide 24-hour monitoring and maintenance of the quality of DCN communications channels and traffic circuits. The worldwide Defence Communications Network (DCN) is an infrastructure of communications stations and control centres interconnected by HF radio, military and commercial satellite and long distance landlines.

4:1 Audio Interface
In support of Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering, Drumgrange designed and manufactured sixty 4:1 Audio Mixer Units that interface between the primary Interface Communications System Outstations/Loudspeaker Interface Units and the Main Broadcast Equipment, allowing both General Broadcasts and Section Broadcasts to be output from the same loudspeakers.

RICE 10 - Digital Internal Communications
Drumgrange designed, developed and delivered the node and outstation electronics for RICE 10 - a Digital Internal Communications System for the Royal Navy – in less than nine months. The contract, with Redifon SPT, included hardware and firmware to full Naval standards and the production of full manufacturing drawings to allow competitive hardware procurement. The contract included delivery of fully tested pre-production hardware, together with a suite of automated module and unit test software.

RF COMMUNICATIONS:

Mobile Radio Communications Defensive Monitoring
Using COTS products we supplied MoD’s Special Projects IPT with Mobile Radio Monitoring Systems covering a frequency range of at least 1.5 to 500 MHZ. Comprising 4 sub-systems for monitoring, recording, control, and transcription/analysis, the system is designed for easy integration into air-freightable military vehicles and is modular to allow removal, transportation and use without the host vehicle.

VLF/LF Multimode Transmitter Drives (DDR310)
DDR310 enables up to 4 x 50 (or 75) baud keystream data inputs, or one high-speed Morse input, to be formatted and modulated onto a high-stability LF/VLF carrier. The modulated carrier is then passed to the associated transmitter power amplifiers. Versions that incorporate extended or remote control and automatic antenna fine tuning are available. Comprehensive built-in test circuits are included in the design.

MSK Demodulators (DDM311)
Designed to meet all the requirements of NATO STANAG 5030, the compact DDM311 enables the continuous off-air data recovery of MSK and FSK from up to five separate VLF radio receivers and 20 data channels simultaneously. In service with NATO, versions are available for onboard naval use to upgrade existing VLF/LF receivers for multichannel MSK service.

VHF/UHF Transceivers (DX500 Series)
This range of adaptable and compact Transceivers covers ICAO and Military VHF and UHF frequency bands and is designed for professional, government and military users in surface to surface and surface to air roles. Options are available for fixed, mobile and marine applications, independent and co-sited environments and various primary power and remote control applications

VHF/UHF Antenna Multi-couplers (DMC530)
Designed for fixed, transportable and mobile applications, the DMC530 enables up to eight VHF/UHF receivers to share a common antenna. Two receiving antenna inputs can be selected by a front panel switch. Used as part of a transportable monitoring, DF and automated jamming system, the equipment has been in service with Royal Navy since 1996. Versions are available with 115 V AC, 240 V AC and 28 V DC power supplies.

Monitoring, Direction Finding and Electronic Warfare
Used for training the RN’s Fleet Electronic Warfare communicators, Drumgrange supplied ruggedised ship to shore communication monitoring, EW simulation and direction finding equipment and comprehensive maintenance support.

Voice Monitoring and Analysis
Under contract to MOD DPA CSIS IPT, we supplied monitoring and analysis equipment that characterises the intelligibility of speech being handled by one or more voice communications systems.

Bowman Radio Test Boxes
To enable DERA to evaluate Bowman radio equipment, we designed and manufactured 17 portable, battery powered test boxes to measure bit error rates and noise generation and delivered them within a five month programme.

VLF Submarine Broadcast Strategic Communications
This highly competitive project included the design and development of hardware and associated software, environmental testing, documentation and production of 118 units under contract to GEC-Marconi Secure Systems. Following successful trials the equipment entered service on RN submarines and we provide full, ongoing CDS, PDS and maintenance support.
